Shelving and Blinds — What I Do
This page covers two related installation jobs that often get requested together: wall-mounted shelving and window coverings.
Shelving: I install floating shelves, bracket shelves, garage utility shelving, closet organiser shelving, bathroom shelving, and display ledges. The key step is finding the stud layout and matching anchor hardware to the load — a shelf holding heavy books needs studs; a small bathroom shelf for toiletries can use rated hollow-wall anchors.
Blinds and window coverings: I mount curtain rods, roman blinds, roller blinds, cellular blinds, and venetian blinds. Inside-mount and outside-mount installs both need to be square to the window — blinds that hang slightly crooked look off even if the gap is only a few millimetres. I use a level throughout and check the final result before calling the job done.
Other installs: Large mirrors, artwork, TV wall art, picture rails, and wall-mounted hooks and coat racks fall into the same category. If it mounts to a wall and needs to stay there safely, I can quote it.

How to Get a Quote
Send a photo of the wall or window and tell me what you are installing — shelf type, dimensions, weight capacity needed, or blind brand. For multiple windows, a count and the window sizes (or approximate widths) help me estimate accurately.
What affects the quote: number of items, wall type, shelf load, and whether the product has been purchased or still needs to be sourced.

Getting It Level: Why It Matters More Than You Think
A shelf that is even slightly off level looks wrong from across the room. Blinds that hang crooked leave uneven gaps. Curtain rods where one bracket is a half-inch lower than the other make the whole window look uneven.
I use a proper level on every installation — not just eyeballing it. For shelves that need to align across a wall or match an existing run, I take measurements from the floor and ceiling to account for out-of-square walls (common in older Winnipeg homes where walls have settled).
For gallery walls with multiple items, I sketch a rough layout on paper first and confirm with the homeowner before drilling. Moving holes later in drywall means more patch work.
Also related: TV mounting and grab bars and home safety — both involve similar wall anchoring decisions.
Older Winnipeg homes — particularly those built before 1970 — often have plaster walls rather than drywall. Plaster is harder than drywall and requires different anchoring. A plaster wall can hold a shelf as well as a drywall wall if anchored properly with toggle bolts or plaster anchors. I carry anchors for both. If you have plaster walls, mention it when you send the photo — it affects the tools I bring and the time I allow for the job.
What You Supply, What I Bring
You supply the shelving, blinds, or hardware — I bring the tools. I carry a stud finder, laser level, cordless drill, various bits, screwdrivers, a tape measure, and an assortment of fasteners for drywall, studs, and concrete.
If you are buying shelves and are not sure what bracket system or anchor type to use, feel free to email me the product link before purchasing — I can flag if there is a compatibility concern for your wall type.
I do not supply blinds, curtain rods, or shelving units, but I can point you to the right type if you describe your wall material and load requirements. For anything involving custom measurements, buying before the site visit is fine — I can work with what you have.
See what I can help with for any items you are unsure about.
For concrete or brick walls — basements, feature walls, garages — I carry masonry drill bits and hammer-set anchors. These take a bit more time than standard drywall installs, so mention the wall material when you get in touch.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →
