Grab Bar Installation — What I Do
Grab bars are one of the most practical safety additions a Winnipeg home can have, and installation is straightforward when done properly.
I install horizontal, vertical, and angled grab bars in shower stalls, bathtub surrounds, and next to toilets. For staircases and hallways I mount assist rails and handrail extensions. The bar location is discussed with the homeowner before drilling — height and angle depend on who will use it most and what movement they need to support.
Anchor selection is the part that matters most. Grab bars are emergency-load items; they need to hold a person's full body weight applied suddenly. That means studs, or specific toggle anchors rated for shear loads in wet environments. I use a stud finder before laying out hole positions, and where tile needs drilling I use a diamond-tipped bit to avoid cracking the surrounding tile.
For tiled shower walls I apply masking tape over the drill marks to control tile cracking, drill slowly at low RPM, and use the right anchor for a wet-area installation.
No plumbing work is involved — grab bars attach only to the wall.

How to Get a Quote
Tell me where the bar is going (shower wall, tub wall, toilet side, staircase), the wall material (tile, drywall, fibreglass surround), whether you have bars already purchased, and how many locations.
A photo of each installation area helps me see the stud layout possibilities and the tile pattern.
What affects the quote: number of bars, wall type, whether bars are supplied, and access difficulty.

Where Grab Bars Make the Biggest Difference
The highest-risk zones in a home for fall injury are the bathtub entry/exit and the shower floor. A wet, soapy surface combined with stepping over a tub wall is the most common scenario for bathroom falls.
Bathtub entry: A vertical bar on the wall at the foot of the tub, at hand height for stepping over, is the single most useful addition for most households. If the tub has a sliding door track, the bar goes beside it on the wall.
Shower stall: An angled bar on the wall beside the entry point assists with stepping in and out. A horizontal bar on the long wall provides balance once inside.
Toilet: Side grab bars are particularly useful for people recovering from hip or knee surgery, or for anyone with reduced leg strength getting up from a seated position.
Staircase: Handrail extensions at the top and bottom of indoor stairs give extra reach when the main rail ends before the last step. Also related: caulking and weatherstripping and shelving installation can often be combined in the same visit.
What I Do Not Install
To be straightforward about scope: I install wall-mounted bars and rails that do not involve plumbing or electrical connections. I do not install grab bars that require cutting into plumbing walls to add blocking, I do not install toilet-mounted flip-down bars (those attach to the toilet itself, no wall work), and I do not do any electrical work in bathrooms.
I also do not install stairlifts or wheelchair ramps — those are larger accessibility projects that need a contractor with specific equipment.
If the bar location requires wall blocking to be added inside the wall cavity (because there are no studs and the wall is too thin for toggle anchors), that is a more involved job that I would quote separately.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →
