Services

Two flooring and tile services — here is what each involves and when each is the right call:

Laminate and Vinyl Plank Installation — Floating laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP) installation in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and basements. I handle the full sequence: pulling up old flooring, checking and prepping the subfloor, installing underlayment, laying the click-lock planks, and fitting transitions and quarter-round at the edges. What to send: a photo of the room plus the approximate square footage. When you need it: when existing flooring is worn, damaged, or simply dated — and you want a one-day or two-day install that improves how the room feels immediately.

Backsplash and Tile Regrouting — Kitchen and bathroom backsplash tile installation, and regrouting old tile that has cracked, stained, or deteriorated. Fresh grout makes old tile look new. What to send: a wide photo of the tile area and a close-up of the grout condition. When you need it: when grout is cracking, staining badly, or growing mould that does not scrub out; or when you are doing a kitchen refresh and want a new backsplash behind the stove or counter.

What is out of scope for a solo operator: Large whole-home flooring installations across multiple rooms in a single week, heated floor system installation, full bathroom floor tile installs over large areas (I do backsplash and spot tile — full wet-area floor installations are a bigger scope), or hardwood floor sanding and finishing (that requires specialized equipment I do not carry).

How Quoting Works

Send me photos of the room and tell me the square footage if you know it. For tile work, show me the existing tile and grout condition.

  1. Email a photo of the floor or tile area plus square footage.
  2. I reply with a price.
  3. I send you available times and you pick one.

What affects the quote: room size, subfloor condition (mention any squeaks or soft spots), whether you are supplying the flooring or want me to source it, and for tile work — size of the area and condition of the existing substrate.

What to Expect

Flooring installation is dusty and involves moving furniture. I will tell you what the room needs to look like before I arrive. Subfloor issues (squeaks, soft spots, unevenness) can affect the quote — mention them when you contact me.

For large whole-home flooring projects across multiple rooms, you may want a flooring company with a crew. I work well on individual rooms and smaller areas where a solo operator makes sense and saves you money over a big company.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to install laminate or vinyl?
Material costs are similar, but vinyl plank (LVP) has generally become the more popular choice because it handles moisture better. LVP is well-suited for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Laminate is still a solid option in dry areas. Both are DIY-friendly, but professional installation gets the transitions and subfloor prep right.
Which lasts longer, vinyl or laminate flooring?
Good quality LVP tends to be more durable in high-moisture or high-traffic areas because it is waterproof. Laminate can warp if it gets wet. In a typical living room or bedroom, both hold up well with reasonable care. Brand and installation quality matter more than the material category.
How much does it cost to do 1,000 square feet of flooring?
The cost depends on the material chosen (which you typically supply), the subfloor condition, and the complexity of the layout. Jobs with simple rectangular rooms and sound subfloors take less time than those with multiple rooms, angled walls, or subfloor repairs needed. I also quote differently for tile versus laminate versus LVP. Send me the square footage and a photo of the existing floor and I will give you a specific number.
What month is the best time to install flooring?
Indoor flooring installation can be done any time of year. That said, spring and fall tend to be popular because homes are less humid than summer and not excessively dry from winter heating. New flooring should acclimate in the room for 24–48 hours before installation — important in Winnipeg where humidity changes significantly between seasons. If there is a specific timing reason (selling the home, a renovation sequence), let me know and I will work around it.
