Furniture Assembly — What I Do

Furniture assembly covers everything that arrives flat-packed with an instruction sheet and a bag of hardware: bookshelves, TV units, wardrobes, bed frames, dressers, desks, office chairs, dining sets, patio furniture, and storage cabinets. Brand does not matter — IKEA, JYSK, Structube, Wayfair, Amazon basics, all of it follows the same process.

I open the boxes, sort the hardware, read the instructions once through, and then build in the correct sequence. The sequence matters more than most people expect: assembling a wardrobe carcass before attaching the back panel, or installing drawer runners before the drawers, saves the frustration of backing out and redoing steps.

After assembly I check that all visible fasteners are tight, that doors and drawers open and close correctly, and that freestanding pieces are level on your floor. Furniture that needs wall anchoring for tip protection gets anchored to the wall stud as part of the job.

Most single items take 45 minutes to two hours depending on complexity. Larger pieces like full wardrobes or bunk beds can take three to four hours.

How to Get a Quote

Tell me the item name and brand, or send me a photo of the product listing or box. If you have multiple pieces, list them out and I will quote the lot.

What affects the quote: number of items, complexity (a basic bookcase is simpler than a wardrobe with interior fittings), and whether any walls need anchoring.

Saving Time vs. Doing It Yourself

Most flat-pack furniture is designed so anyone can assemble it — but that does not mean it is quick or easy. Wardrobe assembly in particular involves a lot of parts, several stages where sequence is critical, and at least one step where a second set of hands would help.

Common points where DIY assembly goes wrong: installing cam locks backwards before realising it, setting drawer runners at the wrong height, not pre-drilling pilot holes in particleboard and cracking a panel. These are not disasters, but they slow you down and leave visible marks.

If your time is worth more than the assembly quote, or if the thought of spending a Saturday reading a 40-step instruction sheet does not appeal to you, that is exactly what I am here for.

See also TV mounting if the unit goes next to a wall-mounted screen, or shelving and blinds if you need additional wall shelving installed at the same time.

What to Have Ready Before I Arrive

Keep all the boxes in the room where the furniture will go. I bring basic assembly tools — Allen keys, screwdrivers, a rubber mallet, a level. If the item needs a cordless drill (some IKEA wardrobes have a lot of pilot holes to drive), I bring one.

If there is a specific reason a piece needs to go against a particular wall — a cable port location, a window, a door swing — let me know ahead of time so I plan the assembly orientation correctly from the start. Rotating a half-assembled wardrobe to face the other direction is not impossible, but it wastes time.

For items requiring wall anchoring, I will need the wall to be accessible (furniture pushed out from the wall by at least 18 inches on the anchor side).

See the handyman services guide if you are unsure whether a specific item falls inside assembly scope.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →

Frequently Asked Questions

Is furniture assembly worth it?
For complicated pieces — large wardrobes, loft beds, multi-section shelving units — it usually is. Flat-pack furniture can take two to four hours for a single person working alone, longer if the instructions are unclear or parts are easy to mix up. Hiring someone frees your afternoon and avoids the frustration of getting halfway through and finding a step done in the wrong order.
Are you supposed to tip furniture assemblers?
There is no obligation or industry standard around tipping for furniture assembly. If the job went smoothly, a tip is always appreciated but never expected. The quote covers the full job, so the quote spells out exactly what it covers.
How much does it cost to assemble furniture?
The quote depends on the number of pieces, the complexity of the item, and whether assembly instructions are included (missing instructions slow the job down). A single IKEA bookcase takes less time than a wardrobe with sliding doors. Send me the item name or a photo of the box and I will give you a specific number. (888) 906-0022
