Services

Three carpentry and finish-work services — here is what each involves and when you need it:

Trim and Baseboard Installation — New baseboards, door casing, chair rail, or crown moulding. Measured, mitre-cut, nailed, and caulked. The difference between a freshly painted room and a finished room. What to send: a photo of the room and the profile you want to match. When you need it: after painting new construction, after a flooring install that required baseboard removal, or when the existing trim is damaged beyond repair.

Door Installation and Repair — Interior doors hung on new frames, exterior doors swapped out (door supplied by you), and repairs to doors that stick, drag, or do not latch properly. A sticking door in a Winnipeg winter is more than annoying — a door that does not close properly is a heat loss problem. What to send: a photo of the door and frame, and whether the door is being replaced or just adjusted. When you need it: whenever a door no longer closes cleanly, or when you are installing a new door into an existing rough opening.

Window and Screen Repair — Rescreening window and door screens, fixing latches and hardware, adjusting frames that have shifted. I do not replace full window units — that is window-company work. But most screen and hardware issues are simple fixes. What to send: a photo of the screen or the hardware issue. When you need it: each spring when screens go back in, or when a latch or closer fails.

What is out of scope: New framing, structural changes, window unit replacement (I do hardware and screens, not glazing), full door frame installation from rough framing (I work with existing frames or pre-hung door units).

How Quoting Works

For trim and door jobs, a photo helps a lot. Show me the door frame, the baseboard profile you want to match, the room.

  1. Send photos of the door, window, trim area, or hardware issue.
  2. I reply with a price.
  3. I send you available times and you pick one.

What affects the quote: linear feet of trim, door type and opening condition, whether materials are supplied or need to be sourced, and the condition of the existing frame.

What to Expect

Trim and baseboard work is one of those jobs that makes a room look polished. I bring a mitre saw, nail gun, and caulk. You pick the trim profile and I will match it to what is already in the house if you want consistency.

For door installation, I work with pre-hung door units. Supply the door and I handle the install. If your existing door just needs to be planed or the strike plate adjusted, that is a quick visit.

Window screen repairs are typically quick — bring the screen frames to me or I pull them on-site.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three types of carpenters?
Broadly: rough carpenters (framing, structural work), finish carpenters (trim, doors, cabinets), and furniture makers or cabinet builders. What I do is finish carpentry — installing trim, hanging doors, fixing windows and screens. Structural framing is a different trade.
Is window repair worth doing myself?
Screen repairs and hardware adjustments are DIY-friendly if you are comfortable with basic tools. Frame repairs, replacing sashes, or fixing sills that have rotted are trickier. If you are not sure, send me a photo and I will tell you if it is a one-visit fix or something more involved.
What do carpenters charge per hour in Canada?
Rates vary by job type and region. For finish carpentry work like trim, doors, and screens, I quote flat rates per job rather than by the hour — it is more predictable for you and aligns my incentive with finishing the work efficiently. The cost factors are material quantity (linear feet of trim), door type, and how much prep work is needed. Send me a photo and I will quote it directly.
