Services

This silo covers three drywall and ceiling services, and here is when each one is the right call:

Drywall Repair — Holes from doorknobs, removed anchors, water damage patches, cracked corners, screw pops. I match the texture so the repair blends in and disappears under paint. What to send: a photo of the damage. Small repairs (hole under 20 cm) can usually be quoted from a single photo. Repairs typically involve two or three visits for the joint compound to dry between coats — I will tell you the schedule upfront.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal — Wet-scrape the stipple texture off and smooth the ceiling for painting. Critical note: Popcorn ceilings applied before approximately 1990 may contain asbestos. Manitoba Regulation 217/2006 and SAFE Work Manitoba guidance require that any suspected asbestos-containing material be tested by an accredited lab before any scraping begins. I will not scrape a ceiling until you can show me a test result confirming it is asbestos-free. See the full guide: Popcorn Ceiling Asbestos Testing in Manitoba. What to send: a photo of the ceiling, the approximate room size, and confirmation of the home's build year.

Drywall Taping and Finishing — If you have had new drywall hung (by a drywaller or during a renovation), I can tape, mud, and finish it to a smooth, paintable surface. What to send: photos of the area to be finished and the square footage of drywall involved. I do not hang full rooms of drywall — whole-basement installs are too large a job for one person working alone.

What is out of scope: Hanging full rooms or full basements of new drywall, asbestos-containing ceiling removal (requires a licensed abatement contractor), spray-texture application (I do not spray), or fire-rated assembly work that requires certified inspection.

How Quoting Works

Send me a photo of the damage or the ceiling area — I can usually quote from that. For larger taping jobs, I may want to see it in person first.

  1. Email a photo of the drywall issue, the ceiling area, or the freshly-hung drywall.
  2. I reply with a price and tell you how many visits the job will likely need.
  3. I send you available times and you pick one that fits your schedule.

What affects the quote: size of the damage or area, texture matching required, number of coats needed, and access (high ceilings take longer).

What to Expect

Drywall work takes time to dry between coats. A standard repair visit may involve two or three coats of joint compound over two or three days. I will be clear about what the schedule looks like before I start.

I do not hang new drywall on large projects (full basements or full rooms). Those jobs need a drywalling crew. What I do well is patches, repairs, and finishing work on smaller areas.

Popcorn ceiling removal requires the room to be cleared of furniture and the floor covered. I bring my own drop sheets.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →

Frequently Asked Questions

Can damaged drywall be repaired?
Yes, in most cases. Holes, cracks, screw pops, water-stained patches — most of this is repairable. The key is matching the existing texture so the repair blends in. Send me a photo and I will tell you if the repair makes sense or if replacement is a better call.
Are popcorn ceilings worth removing?
Many homeowners remove them when painting or renovating because a smooth ceiling looks more current. The job is straightforward if the ceiling tests asbestos-free. If your home was built before about 1990, Manitoba WSH regulations require asbestos testing before any scraping begins.
What year did popcorn ceilings stop having asbestos?
Asbestos use in building materials declined sharply in the 1980s, but the cutoff is not a precise year. SAFE Work Manitoba recommends treating any popcorn or stipple ceiling applied before approximately 1990 as potentially containing asbestos until tested and confirmed clear by an accredited lab.
How much would it cost to drywall a 12x12 room?
Full drywall installation in a 12×12 room is outside my scope — I do not hang full rooms. What I do handle is smaller work: patches and repairs (quoted per job), taping and finishing on new drywall already hung (quoted by area), and popcorn ceiling removal (quoted by room size). If you need the full hang-and-finish package, you will want a drywall company with a crew. Send me the scope and I will tell you honestly which parts I can help with.
