Drywall Repair — What I Do
Drywall takes damage in a dozen different ways, and most of it is fixable without replacing an entire panel.
I handle: nail holes and fastener pops from old pictures or shelving; doorknob impact holes (the classic); access cuts left by electricians or plumbers that nobody patched back up; stress cracks along taped seams; small to medium holes from whatever happened; and water-stained sections where the source of moisture has been fixed but the drywall surface needs refinishing.
The repair method depends on hole size. Small holes under about four inches get a mesh patch or a California patch with joint compound. Medium holes up to a foot use a backing board cut into the opening for a solid anchor. The steps after are the same for all: joint compound, prime coat, texture if needed, and then ready for paint.
I do not supply paint — patched areas are left primed and ready for you to apply your wall colour. If you want me to paint the patch area to blend with the existing wall, that can be added to the quote.

How to Get a Quote
Take a photo of the damage — include something for scale (a phone, a hand) so I can gauge the hole size. Tell me if the wall has a smooth finish or a texture, and whether there is matching paint available.
What affects the quote: hole size, number of repairs, whether texture matching is required, and whether the finished patch needs to be painted to blend.

Texture Matching: The Hardest Part of Drywall Repair
A patch that is smooth in a skip-trowel or orange-peel textured wall will look wrong even after painting. Texture matching is the step that separates a professional repair from a visible patch job.
I carry a few spray textures and have practiced the main patterns used in Winnipeg residential construction: orange peel, knockdown, and light skip-trowel. I test the texture on a scrap piece first, compare it to your wall in the same lighting, and adjust before touching the repair area. For heavy popcorn or stipple texture, I apply a hand-sprayed version that holds the same depth as the original.
The key is not trying to rush the mud coats. Each coat needs to dry fully before sanding — forcing it with a heat gun leaves bubbles and uneven shrinkage. A proper repair takes time between coats; I plan for two visits on anything with texture matching.
For related work, see drywall taping and finishing for new drywall installs, and popcorn ceiling removal for textured ceilings. For any questions about scope, the handyman scope guide explains what I take on.
What to Expect After the Repair
The patched area will be primed and ready for paint. I clean up the dust and debris before leaving. Sanding drywall compound creates a fine white dust — I use a plastic drop sheet and a sanding vacuum attachment to contain it, but some dust is unavoidable. A quick wipe of nearby surfaces after the job is usually enough.
For multi-coat repairs with texture, expect two visits: one to apply the patch and initial compound, and one to sand, texture, and prime once fully dry. This is normal for any patch larger than a few inches.
If you want the patch painted to match the existing wall colour, I can do that on the second visit — bring a chip or the original paint can so I can confirm the colour.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →
