Drywall Taping and Finishing — What I Do

Taping and finishing is the work that happens after drywall sheets are hung — it is what turns raw panels and seams into a smooth surface ready for paint.

I work on new drywall installations in finished basements, bedroom additions, and single rooms where sheets have already been hung or where I hang the sheets as part of the same job. I also handle larger repair areas where the existing tape has bubbled or lifted off the seam, which produces cracks that repaint does not fix.

The process: first coat of mud over mesh tape (or paper tape for butt joints), second coat feathered out wider on each side, third coat smoothed to a final surface, then sanding and a prime coat. Each coat needs to dry fully before the next — this is not a one-day job for anything larger than a small patch. I schedule the coats across multiple visits if the space is not well-heated or is in a basement where drying takes longer.

I can also apply light texture — orange peel or knockdown — over finished surfaces if the rest of the room has texture.

How to Get a Quote

Tell me the square footage of the area, whether sheets are already hung or need hanging, how many inside and outside corners, and the desired finish (smooth or textured). A quick site visit to measure is often the most accurate way to quote a taping job.

What affects the quote: square footage, number of coats required to reach the finish level, ceiling vs. wall (ceiling finishing takes longer), and the number of access panels, recessed lights, or other cutouts to finish around.

The Three-Coat Process: Why It Takes Time

Drywall mud shrinks as it dries — sometimes by 10 to 15 per cent by volume. That means a coat applied at a uniform thickness will not be uniform after drying. The first coat fills the seam and embeds the tape. The second coat, applied after the first has fully dried, covers any remaining texture and feathers the edges out. The third coat is the final smoothing pass, feathered wide enough that the transition from mud to drywall surface is invisible.

After the third coat dries, the surface is sanded smooth. Any sanding scratches are filled with a light skim if needed. Then primer goes on — this is a non-negotiable step. Unprimed joint compound absorbs paint differently than the surrounding drywall surface, which shows up as a flat patch in raking light even through two coats of paint.

If you are finishing a basement where temperature is lower and humidity is higher, add a day or two to each drying step. Rushing the coats in a cool basement is the most common cause of bubbled tape I see when doing repairs.

What I Do Not Take On

Whole-house drywall installs — hanging sheets, taping, and finishing throughout an entire house — are typically crew jobs. As a solo operator I take on single rooms, basements, and partial walls. If the scope is larger than what I can deliver to a good standard working alone, I will tell you so upfront rather than quote it and cut corners.

I also do not do fire-rated assemblies (two-layer drywall for two-hour ratings, fire-caulked penetrations) — that work requires a contractor familiar with the applicable fire code.

For straightforward single-room or basement finishing in Winnipeg, reach out and I will be honest about whether it is the right fit.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →

Frequently Asked Questions

What are two common mistakes made during drywalling?
The most common: applying compound coats too thick (thick coats shrink and crack as they dry) and not feathering the edges wide enough (a narrow-edged patch telegraphs through paint because the edge is visible as a ridge). A second common mistake is skipping the primer coat after sanding — unprimed joint compound absorbs paint unevenly and creates a dull spot visible in raking light.
How long does it take to drywall a 2000 sq ft house?
A full house is a large-crew job — typically two to four weeks for a full drywall install and finish at that scale. That scope is outside what I take on as a solo handyman; I work on rooms, basements, and partial walls, not whole-house installs. For a single room or basement space, the timeline depends on square footage and number of coats required — I can give an honest estimate once I see the space.
What is the average cost to tape and mud drywall?
The quote for taping and finishing depends on square footage, the finish level needed (smooth paint-ready vs. light texture), and the number of seams and inside/outside corners. A room with fewer corners takes less time than an oddly shaped space. Send me photos or dimensions and I will give you a specific number. (888) 906-0022
