Interior Painting — What I Do
Interior painting in Winnipeg means dealing with homes of all ages — 1960s bungalows with original plaster walls, 1980s basements with textured drywall, and newer builds with smooth-finish paint-grade surfaces. Each needs slightly different prep and technique.
The job covers: walls, ceilings, doors, interior door frames, baseboards, window trim, and built-in shelving. I work on single rooms, full floors, or basement finishing projects.
What the work includes:
- Moving furniture back from the walls and covering what stays in the room
- Cleaning walls and sanding any rough spots
- Filling nail holes, cracks, and minor damage with spackle
- Priming bare or stained areas (water stains must be sealed, not just painted)
- Cutting in at ceilings, baseboards, corners, and around trim
- Rolling walls in two coats with appropriate coverage
- Touching up and removing painter's tape once the final coat is firm
I do not supply paint unless we agree otherwise — you choose the colour and finish at the hardware store and I work with what you bring. I carry my own tools and supplies.

How to Get a Quote
A photo of each room plus the approximate dimensions is the fastest way to quote interior painting. For rooms with existing damage (cracks, holes, peeling paint), a close-up photo of the worst areas helps me estimate prep time accurately.
What affects the quote: room size, number of coats, whether trim and ceiling are included, the existing wall condition, and the number of colours.

Prep Is What Makes the Difference
The biggest predictor of how a paint job looks in two years is how the walls were prepared, not the paint brand.
Paint does not hide imperfections — it often makes them more visible. A sheen finish on walls with nail pops and sanded-through drywall paper will look worse after painting than before. A satin finish on a wall with a repaired crack shows the repair clearly if the feathering was not done right.
I spend more time on prep than most homeowners expect. Washing down greasy kitchen walls, lightly sanding glossy existing paint so the new coat bonds, applying a shellac-based primer over water stains before topcoating — these steps take time but they are what separate a lasting result from a re-do in six months.
For rooms with significant repair work before painting, see drywall repair as a separate job we can schedule together.
Also related: cabinet painting if the kitchen units are due for an update at the same time, and exterior painting for the outside of bungalows and single-storey homes.
Indoor Painting Through a Winnipeg Winter
Interior painting is one of the few home jobs that works just as well in January as in July. You are inside with heat on, which keeps the paint at a workable temperature. Low-VOC paints have improved significantly — I often use them in bedrooms and children's rooms where ventilation is harder.
The one consideration in winter is fumes. A quick window open for 10 minutes per room on an -20 °C day is unpleasant but necessary; low-VOC and zero-VOC paints reduce this significantly. I keep the paint cans at room temperature overnight before a job (cold paint applies too thick), and I avoid painting on the same day as heavy humidity from cooking or showering in adjacent rooms.
See preparing your home for winter if you are doing multiple interior updates before the cold season.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →
