Exterior Painting — What I Do
Exterior painting in Winnipeg is a weather-dependent job that requires the right timing and the right products for Manitoba's climate range — from -40 °C winters to +35 °C summer days with intense UV.
I paint the exterior of bungalows and single-storey homes: siding (vinyl, wood, engineered wood, stucco), trim, window surrounds, fascia boards, soffits, porch floors, and steps. I do not take on two-storey or multi-storey exteriors. Working safely above the first floor as a solo operator would require scaffold or a boom lift — that is not how I work, and taking on that height without the right setup is not a trade-off I make.
The work includes:
- Power washing or cleaning the surface first and letting it dry
- Scraping and spot-priming any areas where existing paint is peeling
- Caulking gaps at trim joints and around windows and doors
- Applying one or two coats of a 100% acrylic exterior paint
Paintable stucco and concrete surfaces need a masonry-specific primer before topcoat. I assess the surface type before quoting.

Working Safely at Height on Single-Storey Homes
Manitoba's Workplace Safety and Health Act requires fall protection for work at 3 metres (10 feet) or higher, and this applies to self-employed workers as well. On a standard bungalow, eave and fascia work along most of the house sits under that threshold, but peaks and gable ends can reach or exceed it.
I work with a properly footed extension ladder and do not overreach from the side. Work near power lines requires a minimum 3-metre clearance from lines up to 75 kV; if a section of the house is closer than that to the service entrance or any overhead lines, I note it in the quote and factor in the extra care — or recommend contacting Manitoba Hydro at 1-888-624-9376 if the lines need to be dealt with first.
I do not promise to paint every last corner of a two-storey gable or a steep roofline. What I do promise is to be straight with you about what can and cannot be reached safely from a ladder by one person.

How to Get a Quote
Send photos of all four exterior faces and the approximate perimeter and height of the house. Note the surface material if you know it (vinyl, wood, T1-11, stucco). For stucco, a close-up helps me assess the condition and whether a primer is needed.
What affects the quote: linear footage of paintable surface, surface material, condition of existing paint, number of colours, and whether caulking is needed at window and door surrounds.

Best Timing for Exterior Painting in Winnipeg
Exterior paint needs three things to cure properly: warmth (surface above 10 °C), dryness (no rain within 24 hours of application), and a few days of stable weather after. Winnipeg's outdoor window is roughly May through September.
The ideal months are June and July — longer days, reliably warm, and low humidity compared to the spring melt period. August works well too. September is acceptable but bookings fill fast as everyone tries to finish outdoor work before fall.
Avoid applying exterior paint in May if overnight temperatures are still dipping below 5 °C — most acrylic latex paints need a minimum cure temperature that Manitoba's early-May nights do not reliably provide.
For the same reason, I prioritise getting exterior jobs done before the end of September. A coat applied in October in Winnipeg risks a cold snap before full cure.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →
