Laminate and Vinyl Plank Installation — What I Do

Laminate flooring installation winnipeg homeowners search for covers more than just snapping planks together. I handle the full sequence: assess the subfloor for levelness, remove the existing flooring if needed, install underlayment, lay the click-lock planks in the pattern that suits the room, and fit the transition strips, quarter-round, and baseboards at the edges.

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) follows the same process. LVP is thicker, fully waterproof, and goes directly over most existing hard floors without removing them — which is why it is popular for kitchens and bathrooms where moisture is a factor.

A single bedroom typically takes half a day. An open-concept kitchen-dining area can run a full day or more. I work methodically — no rushing, no shortcuts on the subfloor prep, because a poorly levelled subfloor is the main reason click-lock floors squeak and separate over time.

After I am done, I sweep up, remove the old material, and run through everything with you before I pack up. The whole job is in your home from start to finish — no handoff to a subcontractor.

How to Get a Quote

The two things that shape any flooring quote are square footage and subfloor condition. Email me photos of the room, including a corner where you can see the existing floor and the baseboard, and tell me roughly how many square feet you are working with. If you can measure the length and width of each room, even better.

I will text back a quote. If the subfloor needs patching or levelling, I will flag that up front so there are no surprises on the day.

When Does a Floor Need Replacing?

Laminate that is bubbling, swollen at the seams, or separating at the joints has usually taken on moisture — and once laminate swells, it cannot go back. Vinyl plank that is peeling, cracked, or bouncy underfoot is worth replacing rather than patching.

Many Winnipeg homeowners swap out carpet for LVP during a renovation because LVP handles the humidity swings that come with Winnipeg winters — forced-air heating dries out a house fast, and the rigid-core construction of LVP does not gap and close the way solid hardwood does.

If you are planning to sell and the flooring is dated, new LVP is one of the higher-return improvements you can make before listing.

Laminate vs. Vinyl Plank — A Quick Comparison

Homeowners often ask me which they should choose. Here is the practical version:

Laminate is a wood-composite core with a photographic layer on top. It looks realistic and is comfortable underfoot. It is not waterproof — a wet basement or a bathroom with splashing means it will eventually swell at the joints.

LVP (luxury vinyl plank) has a plastic core that does not absorb water. It handles spills, pet accidents, and higher humidity without warping. The tradeoff is that cheaper LVP can feel hollow underfoot and scratch more easily than good laminate.

Both are DIY-friendly in theory, but the subfloor prep and trim fitting are where most homeowner installs go wrong. That is where I earn my keep.

A Note on Subfloor and Layout

Click-lock floors need a subfloor that is flat to within about 3 mm over 1.8 metres. More variation than that and the floor will rock and click underfoot. I check with a straight-edge and fill low spots with floor-levelling compound before laying anything.

Plank direction matters visually. Running planks lengthwise down a hallway makes a narrow space feel longer. In a small square room, a diagonal lay opens up the space but adds cutting waste. I will talk through the options with you at the start of the job.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →

Frequently Asked Questions

Which lasts longer, vinyl or laminate flooring?
Quality LVP (luxury vinyl plank) typically holds up longer in high-moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms because the plastic core does not swell when wet. In dry living spaces, good laminate is equally durable and often feels more substantial underfoot. Both products vary widely by quality — the thickness of the wear layer is the main durability driver in both cases.
How much does it cost to install laminate or vinyl plank flooring?
Flooring installation cost depends on square footage, subfloor condition, and how many rooms or transitions are involved. Subfloor repairs add time and cost. Simple rectangular rooms with a good subfloor are faster than irregular layouts or rooms that need levelling compound first. I quote each job from photos and square footage — send me those and I will reply promptly.
Is it cheaper to install laminate or vinyl?
Material costs are similar, but vinyl plank (LVP) has become the more popular choice for Winnipeg homes because it handles moisture better — important in basements and kitchens where humidity swings more. LVP is fully waterproof; laminate can swell at the joints if it gets wet. For dry living spaces, both perform well. Installation cost is similar either way.
