Backsplash and Tile Regrouting — What I Do
Tile installation winnipeg searches usually split into two jobs: fresh tile installs (typically kitchen backsplash, bathroom accent wall, or floor tile in a small area) and regrout work on existing tile that has aged out.
New backsplash installation: I measure and mark the layout, apply tile adhesive, set the tiles, cut edge pieces, and apply grout. Most kitchen backsplash jobs — say, the wall behind the stove and counter — take a full day including cleanup. I do subway tile, mosaic sheets, and standard square-format tile. Large-format floor tiles or full bathroom floor installs are a bigger job; email me the scope and I will tell you honestly whether it fits what I do.
Regrout: Old grout cracks, stains, and grows mould. Regrouting means raking out the old grout with a grout saw, cleaning the joints, and applying fresh grout in the colour of your choice. A bathroom floor typically takes one day. The tile itself stays — only the grout changes.
I do not do structural tile work (heated floor systems, full shower pans, or large commercial jobs). If your job is in that territory, I will say so up front.
How to Get a Quote
Send me photos of the area — a wide shot of the whole wall or floor plus a close-up of the existing grout or the area where tile will go. Tell me approximately how many linear feet of backsplash or how many square feet of floor you are working with.
Quote factors include the size of the area, whether the substrate needs prep, tile size and pattern complexity, and whether you supply the tile or want me to source it.

Signs Your Grout Needs Attention
Cracked grout lets moisture into the substrate behind the tile. In bathrooms and around kitchen sinks, that moisture leads to mould and, eventually, loose tiles. The time to regrout is when you see hairline cracks forming — not after tiles start to shift.
Discolouration and staining are the other common reason. Kitchen grout between the counter and the tile absorbs grease and cooking residue over years. Regrouting restores the look without replacing the tile.
If tiles are already loose or hollow-sounding when tapped, the adhesive has failed. That is a tile-reset job, which I also do — it's a bigger scope, so let me know when you send the photos.
What Is the 3-4-5 Rule in Tiling?
The 3-4-5 rule is a way to check that a tile layout starts on a true right angle. You measure 3 units along one wall, 4 units along the adjacent wall, and the diagonal between those two points should be exactly 5 units. If it is not, the walls are not square — meaning the tile pattern will drift visibly by the end of the row.
In most Winnipeg homes, walls are not perfectly square. A experienced tiler accounts for this at the start rather than finding out at the last cut. I mark my layout lines with this check before setting a single tile, which is why corners come out clean.

Questions about what a handyman can legally take on in Manitoba? The guide What a Handyman Can and Cannot Do in Manitoba covers the licensed-trade lines clearly.
Grout Colour and Maintenance
Grout colour selection matters more than people expect. Light grout shows every spill and stain in a kitchen — which is why many homeowners who had white or cream grout installed are regrouting with a mid-tone grey or dark charcoal that hides daily use.
Epoxy grout is harder to install but does not require sealing and holds colour exceptionally well. Standard cement grout needs sealing after installation and periodically afterward. I apply grout sealer as part of the job — it is not optional on kitchen and bathroom grout.
Grout does not last forever even when sealed. In high-traffic areas like kitchen floors and shower surrounds, plan on regrouting every 10–15 years depending on maintenance. The earlier you catch hairline cracking, the simpler the regrout job.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property.
