Christmas Light Installation — What I Do
Christmas light installation winnipeg homeowners look for typically covers three things: putting lights up before the holidays, keeping them working through the season, and taking them down after.
Here is what the service includes:
- Hang lights along the roofline using plastic clips rated for exterior use
- Wrap lights around trees and in shrubs using a technique that minimizes branch stress and makes takedown easy
- Connect and test all runs, replacing any non-working bulbs or sections
- Route power safely to an outdoor outlet — no extension cords through windows
- Set timers if you have an outdoor-rated timer or want me to supply one
- Take down and store lights after the season if you book the removal as well
I use the lights you provide. If you want me to bring lights, we can discuss what type and quantity you need and I will add it to the quote.
What I do not do: Rooftop walking, installation where a ladder cannot be safely footed, commercial building lighting, or animated projector installations that require electrical rough-in.
How to Get a Quote
Send me a photo of your home from the street so I can see the roofline length and any trees you want wrapped. Let me know if you have lights already or need me to supply them.
Quote factors: linear feet of roofline, number and size of trees, height and ladder accessibility, whether lights are supplied or need to be sourced, and whether you are booking removal too.

When to Book
October is the ideal time to get on the schedule. Winnipeg weather in November is unpredictable — a good install window can close fast when a cold snap arrives. Early November is still workable; mid-November is tight; after the first real freeze the ground is hard, the ladders are cold, and scheduling becomes difficult.
Takedown season runs from early January through February, once the holiday period is over. Leaving lights up after February risks UV and cold damage to the clips and wire insulation.
See window cleaning if you want the glass cleaned before guests arrive. And eavestrough cleaning is best done before the freeze, so combining those jobs in October is worth considering.

Safety on Ladders and Near Power Lines
Safety drives every decision I make on a Christmas lights job. Manitoba's Workplace Safety and Health Act requires fall protection when working at 3 metres (10 ft) or more above ground — which means a roofline beyond the first storey needs safety equipment I do not carry for this type of work. That is why I am honest about limiting roofline work to single-storey and lower accessible sections of two-storey homes.
Power lines are the other hazard. Workers, ladders, and tools must stay a minimum 3 metres (10 ft) away from power lines up to 75 kV, as required by Manitoba WSH regulations. If the service entry to your home runs along the roofline I would be working near, I will identify that in the quote and either work around it or tell you it is outside what I can safely do.
For reference: if you need the power line temporarily de-energized for work near it, contact Manitoba Hydro at 1-888-624-9376 before booking.
Light Types: What Works for Winnipeg Winters
Winnipeg temperatures can drop to -30°C and below during the holiday season. Not all Christmas lights are rated for those conditions.
LED lights hold up better in extreme cold than incandescent. They draw significantly less power, which matters when running multiple extension cord runs. The colour is sharper and the bulbs last much longer season to season.
Wire quality: Look for outdoor-rated wire with a heavier-gauge insulation. Cheap indoor lights run outdoors in -20°C weather develop cracked insulation after one or two seasons.
Storage: After takedown, lights wrapped loosely on a spool or a cardboard tube go up tangle-free the following year. Tangled lights stuffed in a bag are the main reason installs take twice as long. If you want me to store the lights coiled for next year, I will do that before packing up.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →
