Eavestrough Cleaning — What I Do
Eavestrough cleaning winnipeg homeowners book mainly in spring and fall. Here is what the service includes:
- Scoop out debris by hand (leaves, seeds, cottonwood fluff, shingle granules)
- Bag and haul the material away
- Flush the full length of the trough with water to clear fine sediment
- Run water through each downspout to confirm free flow
- Clear any downspout blockages from the top with a hose extension or snake
- Check trough slope, joints, and hangers while I am up there
I note any issues I find — a leaking seam, a hanger pulling away from the fascia, or a downspout extension that is missing — and report them to you. If it is minor repair work I can do on the same visit, I will say so and give you the option.
I work on single-storey homes and reachable two-storey homes using a proper extension ladder. I do not work off rooftops or in situations where the ladder cannot be safely footed.
See the companion service: eavestrough repair for seam sealing, hanger re-fastening, and downspout repair.
How to Get a Quote
Send me a photo of your home from the street and let me know how many storeys it is. That is usually enough for me to quote the cleaning. Homes with a lot of tree cover or unusual roof angles may need a quick look in person first.
Quote factors: linear feet of eavestrough, accessibility, tree coverage, and how long since the last cleaning.

When to Clean Eavestroughs in Winnipeg
Winnipeg has a specific seasonal pattern that sets the cleaning schedule:
Late spring (late May to early June): Cottonwood seeds, elm seeds, and Manitoba maple samaras all drop in spring and pack into troughs fast. This is the most important cleaning of the year — blocked troughs in spring can cause water to back up against the fascia during the heavy May and June rains.
Late fall (late October to early November): Once the leaves have fully dropped but before the hard freeze, the second cleaning removes leaf pack and gets the downspouts clear for snowmelt in the spring.
Homes near elm, ash, cottonwood, or Manitoba maple trees often need more frequent attention because these species drop debris throughout the growing season, not only in fall.

Why Blocked Eavestroughs Are Worth Fixing
A blocked trough can not move water away from your foundation. In spring, melting snow and ice combined with rain can overflow onto the soffit and fascia, causing rot that is expensive to repair. In winter, standing water in a blocked trough freezes and can form an ice dam — water backs up under the shingles and damages the roof deck.
Most of these problems are preventable with a twice-yearly cleaning. The job is cheap insurance against repairs that cost significantly more.

Safety and Height — My Limits
Manitoba's Workplace Safety and Health Act requires fall protection when working at 3 metres (10 ft) or more above ground. I use a proper rated extension ladder, maintain three points of contact, and keep a minimum 3-metre clearance from any power lines — as required by Manitoba WSH regulations. If your home has eavestroughs I cannot reach safely from a ladder — rooftop access only, or lines too close to the service area — I will tell you upfront instead of guessing my way up.

I don't do **electrical work** — not even light fixtures, outlets, or ceiling fans. I don't do **plumbing** — not even faucets, toilets, or dishwasher hookups. No **gas work**, no **HVAC**, and no **asbestos removal**. In Manitoba, those trades require a licence and there's no exemption for a handyman working on someone else's property. I'm happy to point you to the right licensed trade for any of those jobs. What a handyman can and cannot do in Manitoba →
